How Do Air Domes Work?
An air dome stays inflated and keeps its shape by maintaining internal pressure. It's usually made from durable membrane materials, like PVDF fabric, and is anchored securely to the ground. The dome has an air exchange system that continuously pulls in fresh air from outside, keeping the internal pressure slightly higher than the outside. This constant pressure keeps the dome inflated and stable, without needing traditional support structures, so it can stand strong against wind and other environmental factors.
The main function of an air dome is to provide a large and open space without needing internal building structures to support it. They are easy to set up and take down, making them highly adaptable. Air domes are widely used for sports facilities, event spaces, warehouses, or temporary shelters, making them ideal for seasonal, semi-permanent, or temporary use.
Whether an air dome is worth the investment depends on your specific needs. The production and installation process is relatively simple and doesn't require complex construction work. The dome's membrane material is specially treated to be strong and easy to repair if damaged. Because of this, air domes typically have lower construction and maintenance costs compared to traditional buildings. They can also be quickly set up and taken down, allowing for easy relocation and reuse. These advantages make air domes a cost-effective solution for creating large indoor spaces, especially for temporary or semi-permanent use.
Once the building approvals are complete and the foundation is prepared, the construction of the air dome can officially begin. First, a special membrane material is laid out on the ground and secured using an anchoring system. This membrane, typically made from one or more layers of PVC-coated fabric, is then sealed and connected to blowers. The blowers continuously pump air into the structure, creating the necessary pressure to inflate the membrane and form the dome.
To ensure the dome's stability, steel cables are installed either inside or outside the membrane to create a support network. These cables help distribute and resist external stresses, preventing the membrane from stretching too much or deforming. Additionally, doors, airlocks, and other features are installed to control the internal pressure. Depending on its intended use, the air dome can also be equipped with HVAC systems, lighting, and insulation. Once construction is complete and the necessary inspections are done, the air dome is ready for use.
The cost of an air dome varies based on several factors, including size, materials, customization options, and whether it includes features like climate control and lighting. Generally, the larger the air dome, the lower the average cost per square foot. For smaller air domes, costs typically range from $50,000 to $200,000, while larger, more complex structures can run into the millions. For example, the cost of a sports dome usually falls between $11 and $50 per square foot, depending on the dome’s quality, size, and additional equipment like fans, doors, lighting, and HVAC systems. Compared to traditional permanent structures, air domes can save 50-75% in construction costs. However, other factors such as location, anchoring requirements, and usage duration can also impact the final price.
The lifespan of an air dome is usually between 10 to 20 years, depending on the quality of the materials, environmental conditions, and how well it's maintained. High-quality single-layer PVC domes typically last 10-15 years, while double-layer PVC domes can last around 30 years. Permanent domes that are used year-round generally have a lifespan of about 25-30 years, while seasonal domes, like those set up at tennis clubs in the fall and taken down in the spring, can last around 20 years. Good maintenance and regular upkeep can extend the dome's life, but harsh weather or poor maintenance might shorten it. It's important to note that usually, only the membrane needs to be replaced, not the entire structure.
