Project Background
Winter Fest is one of Perth, Australia’s most popular winter arts festivals, proudly sponsored by the City of Perth. This celebration is designed to showcase the city’s cultural charm and creativity through various public event spaces. Eric Lumsden, the Chair of the City of Perth Commissioners, noted that as temperatures drop, Winter Fest injects the city with energy and a rich cultural vibe.
The festival offers a diverse lineup of activities, including amusement rides, craft workshops, live music performances, and movie screenings. Among its standout attractions is the Winter Fest Dome, a unique winter party tent created using a 12-meter PVC geodesic dome provided by Shelter Dome. This striking structure was designed to host interactive activities like a snowball play zone and mini-concerts, adding excitement and variety to the festival.
During the planning phase, the event organizers shared their vision for a tent that perfectly matched the Winter Fest theme. To bring this vision to life, the dome’s white PVC cover was custom-designed with symmetrical snowflake patterns, capturing the essence of the winter season. This thoughtful design made the Winter Fest Dome a visual centerpiece, drawing admiration from festival-goers and becoming an iconic highlight of the celebration.

Creating a Natural Event Atmosphere
Dome tents often feature large transparent sides that help connect the inside and outside environments. These transparent sides let in plenty of natural light during the day, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels close to nature.
For this year’s Winter Fest, we enhanced the dome tent’s transparency by using 360-degree clear PVC fabric to wrap the structure. This design not only improved the event’s ambiance but also gave the space a more open and spacious feel, making it even more welcoming and visually appealing.
Reliable Weather Resistance
Dome outdoor tents for winter party features a geometric triangular frame design, known for being the most stable structural shape in geometry. Our dome frames are crafted from high-strength galvanized Q235 steel pipes, offering exceptional durability. They can withstand wind speeds up to 120 km/h and snow loads of 0.5 kN/m². The steel is also treated with professional anti-corrosion coatings, making it highly resistant to rust and perfect for long-term outdoor use, even in harsh weather conditions.
The tent is covered with specially coated, PVC fabric, available in 850 g/m² or 950 g/m² options. This material performs reliably in temperatures ranging from -30°C to 70°C. It’s 100% waterproof, UV-resistant, fire-retardant, mold-resistant, and tear-resistant, providing comprehensive protection for your event. Whether it’s a chilly winter tent party or any outdoor gathering, this dome tent creates a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.
Maximized Interior Space
The dome tent features a column-free design, meaning no support poles are needed to maintain its structure. The interior is spacious, and every corner can be fully utilized. This makes it perfect for a variety of winter activities, offering flexible layout options.
The dome’s spherical shape also increases the overall height, avoiding the cramped feeling often found in a traditional tent for winter party. This creates a more comfortable and open environment for everyone inside, enhancing the overall event experience.
Challenge
The client initially wanted to create a geodesic dome for their event, but the project didn't go as smoothly as expected. To ensure the event's success and make the most of the space, the dome design needed to support a circular truss and chandelier weighing about a third of the dome's diameter.
This posed a challenge for the traditional geodesic dome. The triangular framework at the same level forms a five-segment polygon, not a perfect circle. This causes the circular truss to concentrate its load in five directions, resulting in uneven stress distribution. This could affect both the lighting layout on the truss and the overall stability of the dome structure.
To solve this problem, we recommended using a lamella dome structure. Unlike the geodesic dome, the lamella dome's triangular framework at the same level forms a shape closer to a circle, which helps distribute the load more evenly. This provides better support for the circular truss and chandelier, improving both the safety of the event and the control over the lighting.
Furthermore, with the lamella structure, the even distribution of the framework allows for more flexible placement of the doors. After discussing with the event organizers, we decided to install two doors: one for event participants and the other leading to the organizer's workspace, ensuring smooth access for staff while preventing congestion at entry points. This helps keep the event running smoothly.
Additionally, the lamella structure’s more symmetrical framework makes the white snowflake-patterned PVC fabric cover align better with the overall design, creating a more harmonious and visually appealing winter party tent look.
Outcome
During the day, the dome was transformed into a giant "snowball pit," filled with 50,000 white "snow" balls, creating a magical, winter wonderland vibe. This setup attracted many families with children and became a hotspot for social media influencers, adding an exciting and lively atmosphere to the event.
In the evening, the winter party tent was transformed into a cozy mini stage, hosting performances by popular singers. The music, combined with romantic lighting, turned the space into a unique concert experience that left a lasting impression on everyone.
Both the event organizers and participants couldn’t stop praising the Winter Fest Dome. It not only created an unforgettable atmosphere but also added incredible charm to the entire festival, making it a highlight that everyone was reluctant to leave.
