Experiential marketing campaigns are usually harder to plan than many other types of events. You may have already noticed this yourself. If your challenge is creating an immersive space that encourages people to stay longer, interact, and take photos to share online, a dome structure may be a solution worth considering.
This case study is for readers looking for new ideas or inspiration for experiential campaigns. Through a real project example, we will show how dome structures can bring value to this type of event.
Project Background
In experiential marketing events, space is what turns creative ideas into a real experience. An ideal event space usually needs to offer two important things at the same time: visual appeal and practical use.
Like many event planners, our partner was also trying to balance these two needs. They wanted to create a space that looked impressive while also working well for real event activities. To achieve this goal, they chose to work with Shelter Dome and use the advantages of a dome structure.
For this project, we installed a 30m projection dome to create an immersive visual experience and a flexible event space.
How Can Experiential Marketing Campaigns Succeed Using Domes?
The goal of this dome project was to create a racing experience space filled with speed and interactive fun for families, children, and car enthusiasts. During the event, our dome structure became one of the main immersive spaces.
Inside the dome, visitors could enjoy immersive remote control racing, themed motion games, augmented reality (AR) interactions, and different digital challenges. The experience made people feel like they were part of a real racing adventure world.
During the event, the dome helped improve audience interaction and the overall atmosphere of the experiential marketing campaign in 3 ways:
Visual Recognition
Unlike a standard event space, a dome structure for events can create a more immersive projection experience. Traditional screens usually have clear visual edges, while dome projection allows the visuals to spread smoothly across the curved surface, creating a more natural and flowing visual effect.
In this event, our 30m dome worked together with the overall nighttime lighting design to provide exterior projection effects. Custom event visuals moved continuously across the dome surface, creating a dynamic visual effect throughout the event. The projections also gave the space strong visual recognition, even from far away.
The changing visuals quickly caught people's attention and sparked curiosity, encouraging visitors to stop, explore the event, and learn more about it. This also helped achieve the main goal of the event, attracting people to stay, join, and even share.
Space Flexibility
In experiential marketing campaigns, visitor flow design plays an important role in participant journey and level of participation. After people enter the space, one of the keys to a successful event is guiding them naturally through each activity and keeping them engaged throughout the experience. In this process, the dome can help.
A dome is usually built with modular triangular frame sections. The triangle structure itself provides strong stability, allowing the dome to create a large open space without interior support columns. Because of this, the inside of the dome feels open, connected, and free from major visual obstacles, giving event planners more flexibility when designing the space.
With this spatial advantage, planners can arrange different experience zones around the inside of the dome or divide the space into different sections. This helps guide visitors naturally from one activity to another as they move through the dome. The smooth visitor flow improves the overall experience, strengthens the immersive feeling of the event, and encourages more participation.
Setup Efficiency & Site Compatibility
Experiential marketing campaigns place a strong focus on fast setup and minimizing impact on the original site. Many experiential brand marketing events need to be set up and taken down in a very short time, and leave the site in its original condition without being affected. In this area, dome structures also offer clear advantages.
Our domes use a prefabricated frame system and anchoring methods adaptable to various terrains. All parts are pre-made in the factory and then transported to the site for quick assembly and fixation. This greatly reduces the complexity of on-site construction. It makes the whole setup process faster and easier to manage, allowing the structure to be completed in a short time from start to finish. In this project, the 30m dome was fully installed in less than 7 days.
The event dome also has low requirements for the site. It usually does not need complex foundation work, and after removal, it leaves minimal impact on the ground. Because of the fast setup and low site impact, dome structures improve event efficiency. They also make it easier for experiential marketing campaigns to be set up in different environments and on different types of terrain.
Challenge and Solutions
Although dome structures offer clear advantages in creating ideal experiential marketing for events, some challenges can still come up during real project execution. In our 30m dome project, the main challenges were logistics coordination and a tight delivery timeline.
To make sure the event ran smoothly, we improved and shortened our factory production process, completed manufacturing on schedule, and delivered the dome to the site on time, which helped ensure the successful setup of the project.
In other experiential campaigns projects, domes can also face more challenges, such as fitting content to curved surfaces, higher technical requirements for installation and tuning, and the need for strong creative planning to design the overall experience.
Whether these challenges can be handled well often depends on the experience of the dome design and manufacturing team, as well as the overall project support capability. For Shelter Dome, we are able to manage these challenges effectively with solid technical know-how and project experience.
Shelter Dome has many years of experience designing and building projection dome structures and has worked on various-scale immersive projects. These include the Guangzhou International Light Festival, the AIA Carnival in Hong Kong, the inauguration ceremony of Qatar Port, and so on.
Outcome
The event ran for 34 days and welcomed more than 75,000 visitors in total. From on-site photos and videos, both children and adults had a strong immersive experience, and participation levels were high.
Our partner also shared positive feedback on the overall results and expressed strong satisfaction. The success of this project further shows the value of dome structures in immersive experiential marketing campaigns. Looking ahead, we believe dome structures will continue to help more experiential campaigns projects achieve better on-site impact and stronger brand exposure.
